Style Watch

Goodbye, summer.  Hello, fall!  I always love this time of year as people start making the transition from one season to the next. As people put up their colorful sarongs and summer straw hats, they get excited about the new trends ahead.  Luckily, my birthday (September 3rd) falls during this transition period….every year, I take my birthday money and treat myself to a mini shopping spree for the greatest and latest fall fashion. Why not?

I love my family, and no one knows me better than my two wonderful sisters.  This year, they gave me a beautiful design book for my birthday: Domicilium Decoratus– Kelly Wearstler.

Before and After: Kappa Delta Sorority

Over the past several months, I have been working with the Kappa Delta Sorority of UNC- Chapel Hill.  When I was first brought onto the project, it was very apparent that the house hadn’t been updated in a very long time.  The girls felt that it was time for their sorority house to be refreshed and uplifted….this is where I came in!  In order to reflect what this lovely sorority stands for, I decided to take a youthful yet classy approach to the design of the foyer, sitting room, living room and media room.  It was important to maximize functionality and durability, as there is constant traffic flow and practical use in the house (yes, the girls do need a place to put up their feet, study, lounge, surf the internet…).  Thus, my goal was to give the sorority a comfortable and long-lasting look with every bit of style.  That is what every girl wants, right?!?

Recent Project: Condo in Chapel Hill

I recently had the opportunity to design a condo located at the new East 54 development in Chapel Hill.  For their vacation home, my clients wanted a comfortable and classic look with a mix of antique and modern furniture. I was brought onto the project during the construction phase which was great because it enabled me to better achieve the overall look I envisioned for them.  By layering textures, shapes and tones in a neutral color palette, I was able to create a calm and relaxing retreat.

Here are some pictures:

Foyer: The aged iron lamp and organic materials give a sense of depth, setting the tone for the rest of the home.

Dining area: In order to maximize the small dining space, I decided to use a dual seat banquette. I was so excited when I found this antique french winetasting table with perfect proportions. When I purchased the antique french chairs, they were upholstered in a brown leather. I had them reupholstered in a cream linen with a flax trim/large nailheads. The new fabric and detailing really makes them "pop"!

This antique clock is one of 3 items that the owner provided...other than that, I started from scratch! It was so much fun...

Master Bedroom: I absolutely adore this antique french chest!! The colors in the marble top are amazing. I also love the armless chairs...the nailhead detailing adds so much interest.

Living Room: The ivory linen sheer curtains soften the lines of room without blocking the gorgeous view of Finley Golf course.

Den: I chose this lucite coffee table on wheels so that my clients can easily roll it out of the way when they are ready to pull out the sofa. It also does not take up too much visual space...a feature that is great for this small-scale room

Happy Father’s Day!

When designing a space, it is important to incorporate elements that appeal to all people living there. This is what truly makes a home feel comfortable and personal. For a woman, it can be a fresh bouquet of flowers in an antique vase.  For a man, it often is a comfortable leather chair.

In the spirit of the day, I am going to highlight 5 ways to subtly add a touch of masculinity to your home:

Camp Chair

This “Camp Chair” adds comfort without all of the bulk.  It would look great in the corner of a library or study.

turtle shells

These turtle shells are a unique accent for bookshelves
